Cosmetic dentistry is associated with the betterment and improvement of the facial appearance of a patient. This includes procedures for teeth whitening, dental veneers, dental implants, smile makeovers et al. Also, the cosmetic dentist who one chooses should be a professional whom we are comfortable with. A patient should be able to communicate properly with a professional cosmetic dentist and have a similar wavelength and frequency with him or her. Also, the aesthetic dentist must have valid degrees and certificates to prove his or her educational qualifications in front of them. He or she must also have the requisite experience of having dealt with other patients and done a good job of satisfying them. For this, the cosmetic dentist must have proper testimonials on his or her website to prove this point to other patients and to-be patients.
What is teeth whitening and how is it done?
This is a procedure by which teeth are made whiter by several degrees or grades. It can be done at home as well as in the dental clinic. The at-home procedure involves wearing whitening trays which are manufactured in the dental laboratory after giving impressions of teeth and gums. The trays are worn over the teeth and gums of the patient for a given number of hours each day for a given number of days. They are first smeared with a whitening gel. Slowly but surely, the teeth start to whiten. However, this is not a permanent process. The whitened teeth may get stained or yellowed again if proper oral care is not taken. Thus, it is necessary that a patient follows up the treatment with good brushing and flossing techniques and measures. Teeth whitening can be done in the dental clinic also by first prepping up the teeth. After this, laser light is passed over the activating agent which has been smeared onto the teeth. This treatment is done for a given duration of time (about half hour to one hour) and at a given frequency and wavelength. The teeth whiten properly, and this procedure can be repeated one more time for more effective results. This procedure too is not permanent, and teeth which have been whitened in this manner can become yellowed or stained again if proper oral care is not taken.
What are dental veneers?
These are very thin dental aids which are placed on the tooth surface and affixed there. These can be used to alter the shape, size, and color of the existing tooth or teeth. The dental veneer can last for a long time provided proper care is taken. One should not bite into any food item which is very hard or sticky after getting this treatment done. Also, one should not bite into ice cubes or try to open food packaging with teeth et al. Also, it is wise not to chew on pencil ends or pens if one has dental veneers.
